Atty. Alibogha raises funds for the Nursing Virtual Laboratory Phase 2

Atty. Salex A. Alibogha, Dean, CPU College of Nursing, raised $20, 450 during a fund raising campaign for the Nursing Virtual Laboratory Phase 2 in the different states of the U.S.A. on February 25 to March 10, 2019.

The members of the CCINAA (association of nurses that are graduates of Central Philippine University, Capiz Emmanuel Hospital and Iloilo Mission Hospital) from different states gave the following: Florida Group gave $2,100 and pledged $1,000 more, the Las Vegas, Nevada Group gave $1,500, the Los Angeles California Group gave $2,300 and pledged an additional $2,500. On the other hand, the nursing alumni from Chicago, Illinois gave $1,500, the Seattle, Washington group gave $4,300 and pledge $300 while the Central California group gave $4,750.

In total, Atty. Alibogha was able to raise a cash on hand of $16,450 and $4,000 in pledges.

The said amount will be used to fund the Phase 2 of the CPU College of Nursing Virtual Laboratory located at the 2nd Floor, Loreto D. Tupaz Building. According to Atty. Alibogha, the virtual simulation laboratory will help Centralian nursing graduates to be more competitive and efficient professionals.

At present, the College of Nursing Virtual Laboratory is already operational. The latest addition to the lab is Apollo, “an adult male patient simulator [that] has the most authentic physiology in the industry. Apollo offers simulation facilitators a range of opportunities with which to expose their learners to immersive training scenarios: scenarios where they may suspend disbelief and develop critical thinking, stress management, and patient care skills—all while gaining confidence and competence in procedure and protocol.” (https://caehealthcare.com/blog/cae-apollo-new-face-new-name-same-high-quality-simulation/)

The fund raising campaign for the proposed project has been ongoing with Nursing Alumni Associations worldwide. Atty. Alibogha is grateful that Centralians here and abroad have been generous, “CPU Nursing alumni have been very responsive to the need of the CPU College of Nursing to have the Virtual Lab project realized. A number of Nursing Alumni Chapters from abroad and some individuals have already turned over checks for the project.” Skills Lab Coordinator, Novie Joy Soledad, RN, is managing the said project.

The Nursing Virtual Laboratory will provide simulation of various nursing procedures such as IV therapy, parenteral medications, procedures for patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), and others. Furthermore, the virtual laboratory will have doll simulators, IV virtual laboratory monitors, and camera for other students to watch how procedures are done while in another room. With this Virtual Laboratory, CPU students will be able to practice their delivery of health care and errors will be minimized on actual patients.

CPU BS in Chemical Engineering batch 1982 donates 35k for College of Engineering

Susan P. Jovero, BS Chemical Engineering, Batch 1982, presented, on behalf of her batch, the receipt of the initial donation worth 35,000 pesos to University President, Dr. Teodoro C. Robles, and College of Engineering Dean, Engr. Danny C. Molina, on March 12, 2019 at Dr. Rex D. Drilon Building (formerly known as the Administration Building).

The said donation is intended for the construction of the walkway going to the Engineering Building. Mrs. Jovero shared that they started preparing for this project two years ago and the funds were collected last January 9, 2019 when their batch had their most recent reunion. She also emphasized that this is only the first of donations that her batch intends to make. Dr. Teodoro C. Robles suggested that the construction of the walkway be started after this school year’s graduation and be finished before the rainy season starts.

Engr. Danny C. Molina, in response, acknowledged the effort of the BS in Chemical Engineering batch 1982 and expressed his thanks.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Jovero encourages the Engineering students to do well in their fields since the alumni are supporting them: “I would like to let them see who we are now because of the nurturing and the mentoring [we received from] the professors… in the College of Engineering, and the education that CPU had provided us, especially [for giving us the foundation for our faith in] our Lord Jesus. He really is the reason why we are now what we are.”

CPUAAI holds testimonial banquet in honor of Atty. Ramon L. Muzones

Atty. Rex Muzones presents the medallion of Order of National Artist to Atty. Von Lovel D. Bedona, Chairman, CPU Board of Trustees, Atty. Zacarias D. Bedona, Dean, CPU College of Law and Rev. Joniel Howard H. Gico, Vice President for Student Affairs. The Muzones family has decided to donate the National Artist medallion and some of the original works of Atty. Ramon L. Muzones to Central Philippine University.

Recognizing the contributions of Atty. Ramon L. Muzones not only to Philippine literature but also to the prestige of the University, the Central Philippine University Alumni Association Inc. held a testimonial banquet in his honor at Conference Room 2, 4^th Floor, Henry Luce III Library, on February 26, 2019.

The opening prayer was led by Rev. Francis Neil G. Jalando-on, Director, CPU Office of Communications.

On behalf of Engr. Isagani J. Jalbuena, President, CPUAAI, Atty. Joshua C. Alim, Councilor, City of Iloilo, gave the welcome remarks. In his message, Atty. Alim highlighted Atty. Muzones as a public servant and an advocate of Ilonggo culture: “Atty. Muzones was a public servant, he was councilor of Iloilo City from 1963 to 1971. That’s why after he died on August 17, 1992, the City Government in 2002 issued Ordinance No. 00-121 in September of 2000 to recognize him as one of the outstanding Ilonggos.”

Sharing her insights on why Atty. Muzones was given the distinction of the Order of National Artist for Literature, Dr. Cecilia Locsin-Nava talked about the life, love, and works of Atty. Muzones and his deep appreciation for the Hiligaynon language: “Iloilo waited for 20 years before it could get one of its own [National Artist], and this was Ramon Muzones in 2018.”

After which, Atty. Rex Muzones, son of Atty. Muzones and an alumnus of the CPU Elementary School, talked about his recollections of his father. Atty. Rex remembered his father as a man humor, zest, and passion.

As a writer, legal practitioner, and advocate of Hiligaynon, Atty. Muzones was a man of great depth and appreciation, especially of his own native tongue: “My father and I were brothers. There are many stories to tell about him. [He] has come a long way and the award should rest with CPU where he earned his law degree.”

CPU awarded a posthumous citation to Atty. Ramon L. Muzones. It was presented by Atty. Joshua C. Alim; Atty. Von Lovel D. Bedona, Chairman, CPU Board of Trustees; Atty. Zacarias D. Bedona, Dean, CPU College of Law; and Rev. Joniel Howard H. Gico, CPU Vice President for Academic Affairs.

In response, Atty. Rex Muzones thanked the CPU Administration and the CPUAAI for honoring and preserving the legacy of his father. The Muzones family has decided to donate the National Artist medallion and some of the original works of Atty. Ramon L. Muzones to Central Philippine University.

Engr. Vitini Edhard Idemne then led the singing of the Alma Mater Song. It was followed by the closing prayer led by Engr. Rey Balogo, Trustee, CPUAAI.

CPU BS Nursing Batch 1969 tours Iloilo, Antique during 50th Anniversary

*Rekindling friendships – Batch 1969 celebrates the Central Spirit by re-exploring Panay.*

The CPU BS Nursing batch 1969 saw more of Iloilo province and Antique as they celebrated their golden anniversary on February 7-12, 2019.

The group started with a mini program at the Knowledge for Development Center, Henry Luce III Library. They then visited the College of Nursing at the Loreto D. Tupaz Buiding and the Iloilo Mission Hospital (IMH) where they had their lunch together with Dr. Elmer Q. Pedregosa, IMH Administrator.

On February 8, CPU BSN batch 1969 sailed to Tambaliza, Concepcion, Iloilo. The batch enjoyed the view, the beach, and a table full of seafood during lunch time. The feast was prepared by their classmate, Erlinda V. Arlos.

The batch experienced a more fellowship in Dingle, Iloilo on February 9. The event was hosted by Mr. Ramilo and Mrs. Zenaida Tadeo at their residence. On February 10, they headed to Mrs. Zenaida K. Tubianosa’s home in Antique where they commemorated four classmates who had gone on ahead of them. The night was then filled with entertainment through the song and dance numbers presented by the Cultural Group of Antique.

On the last day of their reunion, some witnessed the dedication service for the College of Nursing Virtual Simulation Laboratory and Learning Resource Center while others proceeded to Pavia, Iloilo for a lunch fellowship hosted by Mrs. Delia G. Daus.

In an interview, Mrs. Angel Robles, one of the organizers of the said event, shared that they chose this kind of itinerary “because it’s very simple and we don’t have to do a lot of work. We don’t need to dress up.”

CPU HS batch 1964: Blessed to bless others

The CPU HS batch 1964 held their 55th Year Reunion at Damires Hills, Janiuay, Iloilo on February 4. Aside from the presence of the alumni of the said batch, the event was attended by Tapasii Ranii Sinha, the batch’s scholar.

Ms. Sinha is taking up Bachelor of Science in Accounting Technology and is now on her 4th year. She was one of the three students who were nominated to avail of the said scholarship. For her, it was a blessing from God when she was chosen since the scholarship helped not only her but her family as well. Moreover, Ms. Sinha is grateful to CPU HS batch 1964 for their generosity. This is the reason why she strives to give back by passing on the kindness she has experienced from CPU HS batch 1964.

Meanwhile, the CPU HS batch 1964 is now preparing to support another student since Ms. Sinha will soon graduate from college.

CPU HS batch 1964 acknowledges God’s faithfulness during 55th Year Reunion

*CPU HS batch 1964 celebrates their 55th year reunion.*

Honoring memories of their high school life, the CPU HS batch 1964 celebrated their 55th Year Reunion on February 4 at Damires Hills, Janiuay, Iloilo inspired by Psalm 92:14 (NIV): “They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green.”

The event was graced with the presence of their classmates, both from here and abroad. There was a total of 21 attendees. The reunion started with a thanksgiving service where they recognized God’s faithfulness. Pastor Sharon Rose Joy Ruiz-Duremdes said that in a class reunion, participants “remember” and “re-member”: “The call to remember is to bring to mind not only the happenings of yesterday. To remember is to draw forth meanings that reshape us and make us better persons. We become who we are because of what we remember.” She added, “A reunion is an attempt to ‘re-member’ because the relationship that we built 55 years ago are too precious to be thrown to the dustbin of forgetfulness… and so at this 55th anniversary, we have come to remember in order to re-member.”

Afterwards, the batch enjoyed each other’s company through fun games and the sharing of their life stories and things they look forward to in the years to come.

The organizers had prepared for this event since April 2018 through online communication. In addition, Emelda Frange-Varcacel, a retired registered nurse and one of the organizers, said that after their 50th year reunion in 2014, the group had been meeting each other annually through their mini reunions.

Meanwhile, Rev. Dr. Sharon Rose Joy Ruiz-Duremdes, also their President, shared in an interview their memorable experiences and the great lessons they learned from CPU: “One of the most exciting… experiences is to challenge each one to do our best.” Moreover, she said that “trying to understand what Central Spirit is [is] to live out that spirit in our own daily lives.”

CPU HS 1964 is looking forward to another fellowship with former classmates, especially in the Grand Reunion at Central Philippine University in 2020.

CPUAA chapters to help in organizing Alumni Grand Homecoming in 2020

*Celebrating the Central Spirit – Centralians here and abroad are invited to come to CPU Campus on February 5-9, 2020 to celebrate its Alumni Grand Homecoming.*

“There is work to do.” This was how CPUFOAA current President Flora Grace Guillergan-Cudiamat explained how the many CPUAAI chapters will get involved in the preparation of the Alumni Grand Homecoming at Central Philippine University in 2020.

The oneness of Centralian alumni comes with the general sentiment of the Central Spirit of love, cooperation and generosity, between and among 156 CPUAA chapters all over the world.

In a meeting with members of the CPUAAI Board, Perla G. Londres Waters, Chair of the CPUFOAA Endowment Committee, agreed that there’s such a thing as Central Spirit at work that bring the alumni together towards the achievement of success for the coming grand reunion at CPU.

The idea of a global reunion started in Chicago in 1998, with the founding of CPU Alumni Association of North America. During the Centennial Celebration of CPU in 2005, the idea came up again with a group of overseas alumni who met and discussed possibilities.

The global celebration takes place every two years; hence, the reunion in CPU in 2020 is supposedly the 11th. However, as it is going to be a grand convergence of CPU alumni worldwide, CPU President, Dr. Teodoro C. Robles proposed to call it the 1st CPU Alumni Grand Homecoming and this was unanimously supported by the CPUAAI Board of Trustees.

A gala night will be held at the premier Grand Xing Hotel in Iloilo City.

CPU BSN ‘79 donates for Nursing Virtual Lab

The CPU BS Nursing Batch 1979 recently donated US$900 and PhP22,300 for the laboratory. This is just one of the various batches of the CPU College of Nursing that has contributed to the Nursing Virtual Laboratory.

The said donation was received by CPU President, Dr. Teodoro C. Robles, on January 29, 2019 at the CPU Alumni Affairs Office. It was turned over by Pastor Lloyd Basco, a faculty of the CPU Junior High School and a cousin of one of the graduates of BSN ’79.

The aim of the lab is to prepare students and develop their skills through depictions of real life situations in the laboratory.

Centralian gets promoted to Air Force Inspector

Major General Samuel G. Gotico, a CPU alumnus, was recently designated as the 72nd Air Force Inspector General of the Philippine Air Force (PAF) effective November 7, 2018.

Gotico received Bachelor of Science in Commerce Major in Accounting at Central Philippine University, graduating in 1985.

He served as the corps commander of the CPU Army Citizen Military Training Unit in 1984-1985 and was a graduate of the ROTC advanced course. In the same academic year he was corps commander, he was also a senator of the CPU Republic. For the entirety of his college life, from 1981-1985, he was a member of numerous organizations.

Gotico was a recipient of the CG, PAF Award for graduating number one among Philippine Air Force General Staff Course students in 2006. In 2008, he was conferred the Bene Meritus Award, a gold medal, for graduating at the top, with an overall average grade of 1.05 in his Masters in Business Administration at San Sebastian College Recoletos de Cavite. In all the military courses he took, he remained among the Top 10 of his class.

He is a multi-awarded and decorated officer, with over 100 medals, awards, and commendations. Some of his accolades include 3 Distinguished Service Star Medals for outstanding military service, 3 Distinguished Aviation Cross medals for outstanding airmanship, 2 Bronze Cross Medals for conspicuous heroism, 27 Military Merit medals for his meritorious achievements, and 11 Military Commendation Medals for his commendable performance among others.

Aside from being awarded 2 Kahusayan Awards for his outstanding feat of airmanship, one of which was because he safely landed his aircraft which encountered engine failure while on flight, he was also given 2 Haribon Awards for exemplary and outstanding Operations Management as Director for Operations of 15th Strike Wing during the conduct of Operation Lighting Sword against the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters, and for his performance as Assistant Chief of Command Staff for Operations of the 3rd Air Division during the Zamboanga Crisis.

He was also awarded the Military Police Officer of the Year of the Philippine Air Force in 1996, and the Armed Forces of the Philippines Military Police Officer of the 1997 due to his outstanding leadership and management when he was the Squadron Commander of the 594th Air Police Squadron, 15th Strike Wing.

Some of his notable assignments include the following: Squadron Commander of the 16th Attack Squadron and the 17th Attack Squadron, Wing Inspector, Director for Operations of the 15th Strike Wing, and Group Commander of Tactical Operations Group 6 based in Dingle, Iloilo. He was also Chief of the Air Force Modernization Projects Management Office in 2011, and the Assistant Chief of the Division Staff for Operations, 3rd Air Division in Zamboanga City in 2012-2014.

He momentarily left the PAF when he was assigned as the Assistant Chief of Unified Command Staff for Operations (U3), then the Chief of Unified Command Staff of Central Command in 2015. Later, he became the Deputy Wing Commander of the 520th Air Base Wing stationed at Colonel Jesus Villamor Air Base, Pasay City and in 2016, he was designated the Deputy Commander of Air Education, training and Doctrine Command where he got his promotion to Brigadier General. He was the designated as Wing Commander, 520th ABW prior to his assignment as the Air Force Inspector General where he was promoted to Major General.
